Subject: Cakewalk
Is there anyone outthere who knows how to get Cakewalk to play over
the GUS (if that's possible). I do not have any external midi synth's
But I would stiil like to try out cakewalk.
Thanks in advance.
PS.
Just to let you know, I think the GUS is great, about 8 months ago
when I just had it I felt a bit cheated. I could only use it to
play modules with, For most of my games I still used my old SB, but
now I use the Ultrasound for all my games, either with Mega-em (what
a piece of software, I can't wait to get the new version) or with
Ultramid. What other soundcard (at that price) can emulate the MT32
or SoundCanvas General Midi (GM is my favorite).
I think from this moment on Gus will conquer the world. More and more
games support it. Now I feel like I made the right choice in buying
this great piece of hardware (And Gravis are really trying to support
it's registered ussers)

$ Is this a problem with the DOS 5.0 EMM386?
Yes, it is. Probably won't happen with DOS 6.
$ I've already tried giving it

$
$ Will a decent memory manager a la QEMM or 386MAX help me out here?
Yes, it will. Care to guess which one I'd recommend? :)
$ My machine

Mine has an OPTi also, but a new one which does not have a DMA problem.
The OPTi problem is only a consideration on older OPTi based boards, and
only if your GUS is on a 16 bit channel.

The daughtercard is going through beta testing right now. When it gets

Can somebody write a little passage on installing the AIL drivers into
T7G (changes to groovie.ini, etc.) and put it into a little Games FAQ?
How about something on MS Arcade?

You're in the same boat as I am, it appears. None of the new SBOSes would
work properly on my machine. Just use SBOS 1.20 (or 1.21).

Don't even waste your time trying. Chances are Epic Pinball will not
work with SBOS at all. Most MOD routines don't work with the GUS' SB

Subject: How to get SoundBlaster and GUS to co-exist?
I just become a proud GUS owner today. So far, I like what I hear, but
I haven't had much time to explore. There's one problem I need some
help with. I have an original SoundBlaster and I want to continue using
it for games, after hearing all these comments on how well SBOS works.
But if I put them both in the computer, the GUS works while the SB
becomes silent. I have the SB set to address 0x220, IRQ 7, DMA channel
1, the GUS set to address 0x240, IRQ 11, DMA channel 5, SB/MIDI IRQ 7.
I'm not sure about what SB/MIDI IRQ means so I left it as the default.
I have read the FAQ but it made no mention of this, (I would think that
this is a common enough problem that should be put in the FAQ). I know
it's possible since I've seen people post about it. Appreciate any help
on this.
Relevant lines from config.sys and autoexec.bat:
config.sys:
device=C:\GUS\ultrinit.sys ultrasnd=240,5,5,11,7
autoexec.bat:
SET ULTRASND=240,5,5,11,7
C:\GUS\ultrinit.exe
SET ULTRADIR=C:\GUS
P.S. I like to upgrade to 1 MB of memory. Some people say the access
time should be <100ns while the FAQ recommends <80ns, who is right?

Subject: Indycar Racing patch?
I got Indycar Racing yesterday, and found out that it was using
Miles drivers... Surprisingly they didn't work with the ultramid-
versions I've got.(Didn't get any sound with SBOS either(1.20/2.08))
I think they're using a custom type of Miles, since the game also
contains ADV/DLL-files for OS/2! Yes, OS/2 32bit dll-files.
Any clues about this one?
What is a racing-game (that blow F1GP out on the water) without sound?
In the installation for music, it said that it needed a FM-based
music-device to get engine-noise, and we don't have this (GF1MIDI is
quite different from FM I think:)
The MegaEm won't work either, since the game is in DOS4GW-protected
mode, or something like that.
Do we have to install OS/2 to get around this one? 35 disks :)

The -x2 switch works with SBOS 2.08 on my 486-50 - no problem. remember

Subject: SB + GUS
Hi there!
I have a proud GUS user, but I have my SB 2.0 in the same machine, too :).
(I don't want to play with SBOS with every game and I enjoy the MT32+SB DAC
feature with Mega-Em 1.0).
The config: GUS: 210 (but I tried every adress :()/5/5/11/12, SB: 220/7/1.
I have a big problem and I need help from the engineers of the card (I think
there are LOTS of peopple who are using SB AND GUS simultaneously, coz SB 2.0
is rather cheap nowadays). GUS USES Adlib adress area (388-389h) even if
SBOS isn't loaded and ALL of the base adresses/DMAs/INTs are EXACTLY not the
same as on the SB.
This Adlib area occupation, as the manual mentioned, is unswitchable. What's
wrong with it?
Lots of programs search for the SB automatically, and these programs WON'T FI
ND
anything... So no sound at all (that is the better case when they found the
emulated MT32 - bautyful!!)... :(
So, even if I lose the one-year-warranty, I (and I think lots of GUS users) am
looking for the modification of the GUS to disable this sh***y Adlib mistake.
Maybe it's only a jumper, but I can solder, cut lines etc... :)
Please, response!
Regards, Werner Zsolt.

** The Sound-Site Update **
****************************
Everything seems to be running pretty smoothly on the sound.usach.cl
site. We are happy to say that all programs reviewed in the Sound
Newsletter can be found on this site and the site is growing everyday.
I am looking for a few people to help with the backlog of new programs.
What this would require is checking the incoming directory and downloading
new programs and verifying that they work (and of course possibly writing
a review of it for the Sound Newsletter if you have time). I can't
promise much but you will be able to see a lot of new programs before
most people and of course get your name in "lights" on the Sound Newsletter.
If you are interested let me know.
Our second site is going through final stages of preparation and we
should be able to announce it in the next issue. This site will be
different from our sound.usach.cl site and we hope you will find it
equally valuable.
Sound.usach.cl users please use the 'ls' command to view the files
on the system. The 'dir' command is still being perfected and sometimes
may not list all the files present. I have updated the MOD directory
to reflect many of the recent MOD files and have provided a listing
below of the new MOD files on the ftp site. Be looking for a list of
Sound file players in the next newsletter. In the meanwhile check out
the players directory as we have one of the most extensive collections
of sound players available.

********************************************
Compiled by Oliver (a.k.a. HITMAN on IRC, #modcharts)
Hello Friends!
Welcome to the world-wide musicfile-charts, edition OCTOBER 1993.
To all "newbies": Please download the MODs from this directory AND all
textfiles (modcharts.*).
The texts will help you to "understand" the MODCHARTS.
To all "regulars": If you were online last month, you only have to
download the three newcomers. If you didn't download
the "old MODs" last month, you have to do it now.
NOTE: Please do not vote for "Enigma" and "I feel much better" anymore!
These two songs stayed for 6 months in the top ten and have to quit
the charts now. If you want them to stay, you have to say so under
the section "MODs that I want to hear next month".
This is the only way to keep these MODs in the charts.
If enough of you want "Enigma" and/or "I feel much better" back,
the song(s) will appear as re-entry next month.
DON'T PUT THE SONGS TO THE PLACES 1 TO 10 IN YOUR VOTE.
Let's get into it:
place last number of months percent of filesize un-
month in the charts all votes packed (Bytes)
1) ( 1) 1989 - a number 4 14.55% 178.776
2) ( 3) Enigma 6 *** 11.69% 187.012

Ok, here it goes:
There are now three different mail digests for Gravis
Ultrasound ("GUS") on the Internet. (If you aren't on the Internet,
you can get these off of Compu$erve, AOL, and hundreds of BBSs around
the world. Look around.) Generally speaking, each of them are mailed
out daily. You can subscribe to any combination of the lists. Here
are the lists, and the addresses to mail to for subscribing,
unsubscribing, and other such matters:
GUS Daily Digest gus-general-request@dsd.es.com
This list is for the discussion of general topics concerning
the GUS, such as installation, compatibility with games and
other software, releases of new software, and so on.
GUS Musician's Digest gus-music-request@dsd.es.com
For the discussion of topics relating to the use of the GUS
for musical ends, ie: composition, performance, etc.
GUS Programmer's Digest gus-sdk-request@dsd.es.com
Topics concerning programming the GUS using the GUS SDK or
other "from-scratch" methods.
Please note that none of these lists are operating system
specific. Threads pertaining to any OS are welcome, be it MSDOS,
OS/2, Windows or Windows NT, UNIX clones, and so on.

** Demo REVIEWS **
********************
by Stephen David Mayo (mayos@lahey.ne.rpi.edu)
MEGADEM#.arj
This is the First (I believe) demo by the Nitrophites. After down-
loading, and unarchiving the files, you are left with approximately
4.5 meg of 30-40k data files of the form DATA##.DAT.. The demo
appears to run only with the soundblaster pro, so if you don't have
it, you're probably out of luck. I was only able to get two parts of
the megademo to run on my machine. One was a jukebox-style modplayer.
(At least I think that they were mods, cuz that what the screen said.)
where the user selects which mod to play via keyboard number and
presses escape to exit. In another jukebox-section the user is allowed
to select one of ten songs to play. These appear to use the Sb-pro
voice driver. I'm reasonably sure that the songs in the demo, were
also distributed with the SBPRO, but I'm not sure. The other parts
of the demo were not seen. At various parts the demos would say
part #, then flash a number (always the same one) 5283: or
something like that and then say Part #+1 . I tried the demo with
three different configs, XMS, EMS, BareBoot. (no himem or anything.)
and always got the same thing.
Overall this one is NOT worth the download.
RAGNAROK.zip
This is phoenix's first demo. The demo seems to autodetect which
card and processor you are using for sound, so there doesn't
appear to be much compatibility problem. ( I'm not sure if it uses
the GUS, though.) The demo has the familiar parts, PLASMA, LANDSCAPE,
and FILLED VECTORS. The presentation is pretty good, but there is
nothing really new here. The plasma looks like a FRACTINT created
plasma, using color cycling. The landscape looks almost identical
to the one found in UNREAL. The filled vectors are very fast.
Pretty decent demo, probably worth a look.
ALPHAPCI.ZIP
This is the intro demo from a demos group called PCI.
The demo has three parts. The first part has several vector objects,
which transform to other shapes. These aren't filled vectors, just
outline vectors. Nothing too fancy here, but it is very fast, and
goes through 5 to 6 objects very quickly. The next part is an effect
that they call the curtain. It is basically a sinus distortion of the
screen, which uses color cycling to give the appearance of animation.
Very similar to the wormhole effect in unreal. The sinus patterns then
fades to a block that says PCI ( just like the FC block in the worm-
hole.) This part is pretty neat, but nothing is very new here as it
only uses color-cycling. The last part is a shadebobs part. Once
again nothing very new here. The music is pretty good, and the mod
file is already extracted so that it can be saved. This demo runs
very fast, all-together it probably took only 1-2 minutes from start
to finish. It is small and even includes some source code for
shadebobs, so this is probably worth a D/L and look.
I am looking for a good musician and/or graphic artist. I have a fair
amount of demo-code that is done, but I lack the talent to do music and
graphics. I'd love to release another AMERICAN demo, because I really
find it hard to believe that the US has so few good demo-groups.

** Dual MOD Player Companion ** ** Update **
**********************************
Version 1.80
Listed below is just come of the updates to DMPC.
Dual Module Player Companion
Version 1.80
(C) 1993 Psychic Psoftware
NEW: File inclusion mask for different players 'cause some players can't
play S3M etc. Added WAV/SND/VOC support (no validation is done on
the files though).
Features: - Supports: MOD, STM, AMF, S3M, 669, NST, VOC, WAV and SND.
- Reads the directory much faster than ModPlay v2.19b ((C) Mark Cox).
- Reads up to 1000 music files in any directory.
- Reads/plays music files from inside ARJ, LHA/LZH and ZIP archives.
- Mouse support.
- Play a list of files sequentially or in random order.
- You can use DMP or PMP (and almost any other player... but who would
want to use anything but the best?)
- Selection window accommodates 43/50 line mode.
- Switch between 25 and 43/50 line modes.
- Load/Save tagged selection.
- Change drive/directory.
- Fast file find with partial matching.
- Help page.
- Extract to temp directory.
- Recognizes Amiga style MOD.NAME format.
- Delete files.
- Multiple config definitions.
- Shell to DOS.
- Format inclusion masking.
What's new in version 1.80:
Fixed a balancing routine in the selection menu (gave one out in a
special case). DMPC will read only the formats in the inclusion mask
if you (re-)read a directory. Swapper will swap to either the temp
directory defined in the environment variable TMP or TEMP, or to the
temp directory defined in the DMPC config (in that order). Support
for Squeeze It (SQZ) archives. Reading uncompressed files should be
faster now. Fixed a bug in the play tagged routine. Changed config
into a more flexible INI-type format. Use CTRL-C for a fast change of
directory on the current drive. Use CTRL-D to delete all tagged files.
You can specify the directory DMPC will start up in on the
command-line, eg. DMPC \MYDIR\MODDIR.
DMPC is THE front-end for DMP/PMP (and almost any command-line driven
player). DMPC v1.80 can be found at:

** Muzika2 ** Notation software - lots of tools and MIDI file output
***************
by Noam Amir
we are pleased to announce that the second version of MUZIKA
notation software is now available by anonymous ftp. it is written in
borland c++ 3.1, running under windows 3.1. it is available in
a file called muzika2.zip, by anonymous ftp.
MUZIKA2 is written using object oriented code extensively,
with much thought given to easily expandable code. currently
its capabilities are:
multiple staves, multiple part scores, most music notation,
extensive editing and block editing, automatic formatting,
and output of midi file. the last means that after creating
a musical score it can be translated to a midi file and played.
unfortunately the opposite is not possible, and input is
from a mouse only, not from a midi keyboard.
we will be happy to receive feedback, which we will take into
account when preparing following versions. our email address
appears in the "about" option once the program is running.
just in case, it's: muzika@piano.technion.ac.il
there are many improvements over the first version: the MIDI output
facility really works this time, and so does printing. support of many
basic music notation elements missing from the first version is now
implemented.
there is also an .arj file containing the manual in rtf format,
in postscript, and in .dgs format which is quite useless for anyone
outside of Israel.

From: Francis Li <fli@nermal.santarosa.edu>
Subject: Stuff...
One of the new things in sound cards is Voice Recognition. Unfortunately,
for the GUS, it seems that it will have to be by software. The software
demos I have tried (InCube, etc), all seem to completely take over the
GUS. I know it is possible to record AND playback at the same time, right?
Is it possible to get a VR program that can do commands AND allow
playback(like in games, Windows sounds, etc) at the same time?
LucasArts is supporting the GUS in Rebel Assault, correct? Will it be
possible to "patch" older games like Day of the Tentacle CD-ROM?
I have never seen a Gravis ad. Then again, the only computer magazine I
subscribe is PC Magazine. I think it would be good if Gravis could get an
ad, no matter how small, in PC Mag. Also, there seems to be some sort of
PBS computer show called "Computer Chronicles" which has little musical
interludes between segments. Well, if Gravis wanted to spend the money,
they could endorse such a show! Kind of doubt it, though...
